October 6th, 2007 — Biomass, mit, research
Filed under: Household
Five MIT students under the team name BioVolt have created a $2 gadget that uses biomass to generate electricity. The output of the device isn’t particularly significant — six months to charge your cell means you shouldn’t throw away that charger just yet — but the low cost of the components, the availability of “biomass,” and the capability for chaining multiple devices together means this is the perfect solution for isolated areas or poor communities. It’s good news for the researchers too, who happened to win $5,000 in a design competition for their efforts. Good show lads.

Sure, we know you and your Video Toaster have been gutted over this whole AmigaOS 4 debacle… what’s that? You’ve never heard of OS 4? You didn’t know Amiga was still around? You hadn’t heard that Bill McEwan, CEO of Amiga says the company’s next OS is going to be “better than OS X?” Well time to perk up those ears, kiddo. In a truly enthralling read, the head of the defunct hardware-maker / software company says that Amiga is hard at work on a number of projects, not the least of which is the follow up to company’s OS 4 — which has been mired in development disputes with a company called Hyperion Entertainment since 2001 — AmigaOS 5. A piece of software guaranteed to surprise and thrill the technology community at large, mostly (we suspect) due to the fact that no one even knew the company […]

As much as audiophiles may hate all-in-one “sound projection” boxes that simulate multiple speakers, as long as consumers have limited space in their apartments — or remain unwilling to chuck cables all over the place — there will be a market for such devices. The Yamaha YSP-500 has dimensions of 610 x 120 x 220mm, and pumps out a rather dismal 62W over sixteen (!) 28mm, and two 8mm loudspeakers. It supports a variety of different surround sound formats, but if you really care about them you probably shouldn’t be looking at this set, which is launching late this month in Japan. No word yet on pricing, or a US launch.

Computer and behavioral scientists at the University of Buffalo are developing a system that will allow authorities to track faces, voices, bodies and various other biometrical data to create a score for how likely an individual is to commit a terrorist act. Sound like the scariest Big Brother plot since China’s ID card scheme? Well, rest assured, Winston Smith, the researchers only have your best interests in mind. “The goal is to identify the perpetrator in a security setting before he or she has the chance to carry out the attack,” says Venu Govindaraju, professor of computer science and engineering at the university, who was recently awarded $800,000 by the National Science Foundation to create such a system. “We are developing a prototype that examines a video in a number of different security settings, automatically producing a single, integrated score of malfeasance likelihood,” adding that the system […]

newVideoPlayer(”TotalImmersion_gawker.flv”, 475, 376);You know those graphics you see on your evening news? Those are lame. But this semi-new D’Fusion software from Total Immersion takes graphical video layovers to the next level—meaning that 3D graphics can be manipulated in real space…and like we said in the headline, real time. This is some crazy cool stuff.
Despite the language barrier, this video gives a nice demo of the technology with some visual explanation of the mechanics behind the magic.[tvinjapan via therawfeed]

From rumor to fact, we’ve watched as HP has revived their iPaq line. The first two units will be coming out in just two days, on October 8th. Featuring Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, identical 624mHz processors and WM6 Pro, the cheaper 110 will run $299 while its older brother the 210 will cost $399.
Of course, with contract, they’ll cost you a lot less. Wait. They’re just PDA’s, or, “phone companions” as the models are called in HP’s press release. And there are no contract rebates for “phone companions.”
Damn. [HP and HP via engadget]

For Apple owners, there’s one consistent event that can make their shiny new device seem dull and boring: the replacement of their specific device with a new one from Apple. Now there’s a new Apple gadget on the block that literally makes every other Apple device look dull. A company called Computer Choppers has put together a Gold-plated MacBook Pro, with an appropriately diamond studded Apple logo. Should go nicely with your gold plated … HP … LaserJet. Yeah. Get ready to sell your house.

Although this “Manhattan” Wide Screen GSM Dual Card Mobile phone doesn’t rip-off any logos, it most certainly is more than “inspired” by T-Mobile’s Dash. You probably won’t want to pick up this $224.99 model, unless you don’t mind living without any internet access at all (it doesn’t even do GPRS), but if you need a phone that does two SIM cards — we can’t imagine what for — then you’re in luck. Then again, if you live in the US or Canada, you’re out of luck again, because apparently this doesn’t work there. Double lame.
