SliMouse Slim-Pad ditches the scroll wheel for a touch sensor

Filed under: Peripherals

Its ergonomics may leave a bit to be desired, but the SliMouse Slim-Pad does boast at least one somewhat notable feature — namely, a “sensor touch-scroll” that replaces the tried and true scroll wheel. That, the company says, will allow for “greater precision and ease of control,” although we’re guessing that control may get somewhat less easy if you use the mouse for protracted periods of time. While other details on the mouse are scarce at the moment, it will apparently come in both wired and wireless versions, with the former able to store its wire on inside when its not in use. There’s also no word on price, and it seems the company has yet to make its mind up about a release date.

Seiko High-Res Super-Thin EBook Reader [E-Ink]

More E-Book News, this one a prototype from Seiko Epson, makers of the cool E-ink watch. The device’s form factor is at least as thin as Sony’s Reader, but it has a 1200×1600 display. Maybe too sharp, on a 6.7-inch screen. (230 DPI vs 160 on the Sony.) I’d take the reader’s store app and complete list of publishers over an eye-ball straining screen res any day. Thanko USB Heating Pad [USB]

The Thanko USB Heating pad has the unique position of being potentially useful as we enter the colder months. Then again, there’s no way this thing puts out more heat than a modern CPU/GPU combo. Just put your notebook on your lap, and watch your man-bits. [Akihabara]

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-T2 reviewed

Filed under: Digital Cameras

CNET has a review of Sony’s new Cyber-shot DSC-T2 up, and the verdict seems to be “well above average,” with a 7.4 score. The case is bit of the podgy side, although if you don’t mind that it’s well designed otherwise with a hefty lens protector taking up the front and a large 2.7-inch touchscreen taking up the back. That touchscreen has problems, with the review pointing to responsiveness issues. The 4GB internal storage is also nice, but the ridiculous proprietary cable means if you lose the one in the box during your vacay, you’re screwed. Image quality and performance is nothing to go crazy over, and you’ll probably be happy with it if you’ve used an equivalently priced digicam recently. Overall, the flaws in the integrated storage and the touchscreen mean this is a bit of a letdown. Go for the T200 instead.

Lars and Ivan iPod Dock Small In Size, Big On Sound [IPod Dock]

Lars & Ivan’s entry into the iPod Dock market is not the typical do-it-all, moderately-powered device. Instead, the PA-40Ti Hybrid is a tube-based 40-watt amplifier that hooks up to whatever speakers you so desire. It also looks like some sort of utopian alien fortress, but I digress. Additional features include RCA inputs, subwoofer preamp and dock connector output (for video and usb connectivity). Belgian retailer designgadgets currently has the Hybrid available for about $342 USD. [designgadgets via technabob]

Nissan GT-R My New Fav Geek Car [Cars]

newVideoPlayer(”GTRUSreveal.flv”, 475, 288);
As car geek icons go, there’s the Tesla, the Prius, and for me the Japanese Nissan GT-R supercar which was unveiled at the LA Auto Show yesterday. Ray at Jalop calls it the GTR-Zilla, but I’ll prematurely call Geek car of the coming year, lack of electric power be damned. I swear, this post gets gadgety somewhere through.
He keeps telling me the Corvette Z06 will kill it dead, and who am I to argue with a car meat head like Ray. But I still love this thing. A lot of that has to do with the instrument cluster, designed in conjunction with game-designers from the Playstation’s Gran Turismo series, pushing a driver into stat and chart overload. A lot of that also has to do with the factory-spec’s insane 480HP from a twin-turbo charged V6. Of course, getting that power to the ground for it’s 3.5-second zero-to-sixty time […]

DVD Forum approves 51GB triple-layer HD DVD spec

Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Storage
Toshiba’s been demoing a triple-layer hybrid HD DVD / DVD system for a couple years now, but it’s been all unofficial until today, when the DVD Forum steering committee voted to approve the spec as part of the official HD DVD standard. The third 15GB layer bumps the total capacity of HD DVD up to 51GB, matching Blu-ray’s 50GB disks. Of course, we wouldn’t expect to see a flood of content on the new disks anytime soon, what with all those shiny new double-layer players getting sold right now, but it’s interesting to see HD DVD step up in the one area Blu-ray was clearly superior. The stalemate continues!

Duracell PowerSource: Impressive Portable Power For All Your Gadgets [Now Youre Playing With Power]

Duracell’s new PowerSource Mobile 100 could be the new best friend of anyone who tends to carry a lot of gadgets around. It can extend the runtime of just about any portable device — and even provide up to 2 hours of additional juice for your laptop. If that wasn’t enough, it also has one AC outlet and two USB charge ports so you can charge multiple devices simultaneously. I would completely fall in love with it if not for the $140 price tag. Unfortunately, convenience never comes cheap. [Product Page via Ubergizmo]
